Travel to Dublin is governed by the Republic of Ireland's rules. Belfast is in Northern Ireland, part of the UK. Ireland is outside Schengen: a Schengen sticker alone does not authorise travel there. Start with the official Visit Ireland Travel Path ↗ using your nationality and document.
British citizens do not need a separate Irish visa. Common Travel Area rights primarily concern British and Irish citizens; the GOV.UK guidance ↗ should not be read as an exemption for all UK residents.
UK residence usually does not replace a visa
If your passport requires an Irish visa, UK work, student or family permission does not itself remove that requirement. Check separately for any exception based on your document or family circumstances.
The Short-Stay Visa Waiver Programme ↗ covers specified nationalities with an eligible UK short-stay visa that has already been used for lawful entry into the UK. Long-term UK residence is not participation in this programme. A UK ETA also does not replace a required Irish visa. BIVS is a separate scheme with its own conditions.
Apply from your country of residence if required
The Irish embassy in London ↗ accepts applications from lawful UK residents. Complete AVATS, select the correct purpose and assemble the checklist documents. Residents of England, Scotland and Wales use VFS appointments; Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and Channel Islands have separately published arrangements.
Prepare UK status evidence, passport, purpose and funding, accommodation and required translations. Disclose previous visa refusals.
Check payment and travel evidence
From 28 September 2026, the London instructions require online visa fee payment or an exemption claim when creating the application. Follow current AVATS and VFS instructions: exemption from the consular fee does not necessarily waive the service charge.
If relying on a visa exemption, carry evidence that you meet all its conditions. The absence of routine border checks does not create permission to enter. Once a visa is issued, check its conditions and your separate permission to return to the UK.
