Buying a mattress and bed in the UK: sizes, trials and delivery

Choose a mattress together with its bed base and delivery arrangements. Even a comfortable model can be a poor purchase if it does not fit the frame, cannot reach the bedroom or has an unsuitable exchange policy. List your constraints before visiting a shop.

Measure the bed and the delivery route

Measure the space inside the frame, clearance around the bed, doorways, stairs and lift. Size names vary between countries: do not order using “double” or “king” alone. The John Lewis UK guide ↗ lists a standard double as 135 × 190 cm and king as 150 × 200 cm; confirm the dimensions of the actual product.

For a new bed, separately check the frame's external dimensions, headboard height, assembly and drawer clearance. The base must also meet the mattress manufacturer's requirements. Keep those requirements with the guarantee.

Trying and comparing

Ask to compare several constructions within your budget and lie in your normal sleeping position rather than briefly sitting on the edge. If you share the bed, try it together. Assess getting up, the edge and how the other person's movement feels.

Do not assume that “firm” is an identical rating across brands. Discuss the specific model, the showroom base and how your home setup differs. Retail medical claims are not a substitute for clinical advice about persistent pain.

Calculate the complete purchase

Include the mattress, any replacement base, suitable bedding or protector, delivery to the room, assembly and removal of the old item. Establish whether carrying it upstairs is included and what happens if it cannot be brought into the property.

Get written sleep-trial terms: refund or exchange, mandatory protector, deadlines, packaging requirements and repeat-transport costs. A comfort trial and a defect guarantee are different arrangements. Ask about restrictions before paying for a made-to-order item.

On delivery day

Inspect the packaging and accessible surfaces, and compare the model and size with your order. Photograph visible damage and follow the seller's reporting procedure. Read the unpacking and preparation instructions for a rolled mattress.

Keep the paperwork until you have checked the returns requirements. Record the delivery date and guarantee contact route. Judge the purchase by actual comfort and total cost, rather than the number of advertised layers or the largest sale discount.
