Choosing a UK duvet: tog, filling, size and practical care

Choose a duvet for the conditions in your bedroom and your own comfort, rather than the season printed on the packaging. A substantial winter duvet may feel unsuitable in a warm flat; a light summer version may be inadequate in a cooler room. Begin with how you currently sleep.

Understand the specifications

Tog describes thermal resistance, rather than weight or overall product quality. Compare dimensions in centimetres with your duvet cover: “king” from another retailer or country does not guarantee a match. Establish whether the package contains one duvet or several sections designed to connect.

The John Lewis duvet and pillow guide ↗ is a useful starting point for terminology. Treat it as a description of features, rather than an individual temperature prescription.

Compare the filling practically

List your priorities: weight, home washing, drying arrangements, composition and budget. Check the actual filling and outer cover of the product. Do not assume every duvet with a similar material name has identical characteristics.

For hypoallergenic or other specialist claims, ask what the wording specifically establishes. A known reaction to a material needs an individual approach, rather than a purchasing decision based solely on an advertising symbol.

Seasonal changes and sharing

For a bedroom with changing temperatures, compare a single duvet with separate seasonal options. For a connecting set, inspect the fastenings, the feel of the joint and the storage volume. A large collection is inconvenient if there is nowhere to dry or store it.

If partners prefer different warmth levels, consider two separate suitably sized duvets. That is a practical alternative to compare, rather than a reason to buy the most expensive shared model. Consider how far you want the bedding to extend over the bed's edges.

Care is part of the cost

Before buying, establish whether the item fits your washing machine and how to dry it completely according to its instructions. Laundry or professional-care charges can change an apparently economical purchase. Check the return position for opened or used bedding separately.

Keep the care label and order details. Assess comfort in the actual room after purchase, rather than relying solely on a tog number. When bedroom conditions are the main cause of overheating or feeling cold, another duvet may not solve the underlying problem.
