Choosing a pillow in the UK without relying on marketing labels

Choose a pillow for your own bed and usual sleeping position. Labels such as “hotel quality” or “orthopaedic” cannot tell you in advance whether it will feel comfortable. Height, filling, care and the opportunity to assess the purchase are more useful comparisons.

Start with your current problem

Write down what is unsatisfactory: excessive height, warmth, loss of shape or discomfort when changing position. Measure your pillowcase separately. If the problem began after replacing a mattress, consider the two items together.

In a shop, explain your normal sleeping position and ask to compare options on a base that resembles yours. Briefly squeezing a pillow is not the same as assessing it lying down. John Lewis discusses sleeping position, filling and size ↗; the final choice remains personal.

Compare usable features

Ask whether the height is fixed or the amount of filling can be adjusted. Check for a removable cover, how it comes off and precisely which components can be washed. The instructions for the whole pillow matter, not just those for the pillowcase.

Compare weight, recovery of shape, any new-product odour and the permitted airing routine. For advertised cooling or support features, ask what the claim means and what maintenance the particular model requires.

Include additional costs

Allow for a correctly sized pillowcase and any genuinely necessary protector. A two-pack is good value only if both pillows suit the intended users. A couple may prefer different models. An attractive filling description alone is a poor reason to buy an expensive product.

Read the returns or trial conditions before opening the package. Establish whether a used pillow can be returned and who pays postage. Do not assume that a policy for one range applies to the retailer's entire selection.

Recognise the limits of a shopping decision

A pillow is a household item, rather than a standalone treatment for persistent pain, numbness or sleep problems. Discuss continuing symptoms with an appropriate professional instead of repeatedly buying more expensive models.

Follow the care instructions and assess whether the original practical problem has improved. Keep the exact model name so you can find a comparable product later. A suitable feel and manageable care routine matter more than a universal “best pillow” in somebody else's list.
