Are commercial microbiome tests and personalised nutrition programmes useful?

A commercial microbiome test may describe a sample's composition without reliably identifying symptom causes or an ideal diet. Current British Society of Gastroenterology explanations do not recommend commercial gut microbiome testing for this use. BSG: Gut Microbiome for Health panel ↗.

Distinguish different investigations

Clinician-requested stool tests for infection, inflammation or blood have specific purposes. They are not equivalent to a wellness report about bacterial diversity. Check the exact test and question before purchasing a substitute.

Persistent bowel symptoms need GP assessment. Blood in stools, unexplained weight loss and persistent bowel-habit changes should not be attributed automatically to a poor microbiome score.

Examine the provider's claims

Ask whether the test is validated for your problem, how normal is defined, whether results are reproducible and what evidence supports the recommended intervention. BSG highlights uncertainty about a normal individual microbiome and effects of collection, storage and methodology. BSG: commercial-testing statement, 2026 ↗.

Research linking bacteria with disease does not establish that a particular home kit diagnoses or treats it.

Assess the nutrition programme separately

Check testing, subscription, consultation and supplement costs, renewal and cancellation terms. Ask whether advisers profit from recommended products. Dietitian is a regulated profession: check the HCPC register ↗.

An accessible app or support with dietary variety may have independent value without validating every medical algorithm. Ask about consultation without an expensive test.

Do not treat a report alone

Avoid major food-group exclusions, antibiotics, antifungal treatment or self-arranged faecal transplantation based on a report. Children, pregnancy, eating disorders and chronic conditions require particular care with restrictions.

If already tested, take the report, symptoms and previous investigations to a clinician. Ask them to distinguish useful information from commercial assumptions and agree measurable goals, review timing and deterioration advice.
