Hard water in a London shower: what a filter can actually change

These are different purchasing decisions. Attractive demonstrations do not establish that one attachment solves every issue.
Check the supply and the shower first
Look up your water supplier’s report for your postcode. Hardness concerns dissolved minerals, rather than visible dirt. The Drinking Water Inspectorate explains hardness and softening ↗. If a change is sudden, compare other taps: a blocked shower head or a plumbing fault needs a different response.
Photograph the connection and measure the available space between the hose and the mixer. An inline cartridge may be too long for the bracket, while a replacement head may feel heavy. Ask your landlord before changing fixed plumbing or their equipment.
Questions for the seller
Ask what the product removes, how it works, and the temperature and flow conditions under which it was tested. Request evidence for the actual model. A statement about softer-feeling hair is not a measurement of reduced water hardness. Check cartridge capacity and whether replacements are available separately in the UK.
Softening and reducing a particular substance are different processes. Do not assume a compact attachment has the same capabilities as a whole-house system. The DWI’s guide to domestic filters ↗ also discusses maintenance. Obtain professional plumbing advice for a substantial installation.
Compare the ownership cost
Write down the initial price, replacement cartridges for a year, delivery and warranty terms. A household may use more water than the single-person example in an advertisement. Ask about the effect on flow and the returns position if an opened product does not fit your shower.
A removable attachment can be practical in rented accommodation because it can move with you. In your own home, obtain an installation and servicing quotation for a proper system before buying several smaller devices.
When the concern is skin or hair
Do not treat a filter as treatment for eczema, irritation or hair loss. Persistent symptoms deserve an appropriate professional assessment; toiletries and hair-care routines are separate variables. Keep the receipt and instructions, and set a replacement reminder. A cartridge left beyond its specified service life cannot be assumed to retain its advertised performance.
The useful outcome is a product that addresses a defined, measurable problem with affordable consumables. If the seller cannot explain its mechanism, postpone the purchase and compare another option.
