After injury, arrange assessment rather than booking an X-ray alone. Some fractures and associated injuries require immediate care; a clinician determines appropriate imaging.

Identify emergency needs

Attend A&E for major deformity, a wound with visible bone, numbness or other serious signs. Call 999 for life-threatening illness, major trauma or unsafe transport. NHS guidance lists urgent signs for a broken arm or wrist ↗.

Severe pain, substantial swelling or inability to use a limb normally need timely assessment even without obvious deformity. Some finger movement does not prove there is no fracture.

Find an appropriate UTC

Urgent treatment centres assess many minor injuries and suspected fractures, but facilities differ. NHS 111 can identify a suitable service and sometimes arrange an appointment. NHS: urgent treatment centres ↗.

Before travelling independently, confirm accepted ages and injury types, current X-ray availability and hours. “Walk-in” does not guarantee full radiology facilities.

Protect the injured area

Do not straighten a deformed limb or try to relocate a joint. Support it comfortably and follow 111 advice. For arm injuries, NHS advice includes removing rings and watches before swelling increases and applying cold through fabric where possible.

Bring medicines, especially anticoagulants, allergy details and injury timing. Mention possible pregnancy. Do not drive if the injury prevents safe control.

Obtain a plan after imaging

Ask who has reviewed the result, what treatment is needed and whether fracture-clinic follow-up applies. A negative image may still require protection and reassessment when clinical suspicion persists; clarify before leaving.

Obtain written advice on activity, dressings or splints, pain relief and return precautions. Increasing pain, numbness or cold or discoloured fingers require urgent reassessment. Do not wait for routine fracture-clinic review if deteriorating. Visitor charging is a separate issue; serious injuries still need timely care.
