Insuring jewellery, watches and other valuables

Start with the schedule and full home insurance wording. A high overall contents sum does not mean one expensive piece is covered for its full value. MoneyHelper explains single-item limits and separately listing valuable belongings ↗.
Check the total high-risk-items limit, individual-item limit, excess and insured events. A rented property’s buildings insurance does not replace cover for your jewellery. Check any bank-package insurance against its documents rather than a general promise of included insurance.
Prepare a description and value
List the item type, brand and model, material, serial number where available, photographs, receipt and ownership evidence. Ask whether an independent valuation is required, how recent it must be and which value it should assess.
Do not automatically use a purchase price from years ago or an advert for a similar item. Establish whether settlement means cash, repair or replacement through a partner, and how unique, vintage or second-hand pieces are treated. Store evidence separately from the item.
Compare cover at home and while travelling
MoneyHelper’s contents guide ↗ distinguishes additional cover for high-value items and possessions away from home. Check wearing, accidental loss, theft, damage and overseas use. Personal possessions, accidental damage and theft are not interchangeable terms.
Ask about territories, maximum trip duration, vehicles, hotel safes and unattended items. If a home safe is required, obtain precise specifications and installation conditions. Compare policies with equivalent restrictions rather than only annual premiums.
Keep records current and report claims promptly
After acquiring another item or a value change, update the policy and obtain confirmation of inclusion. Keep the schedule, valuation, photographs and receipt in a secure, accessible location. Do not publish storage details openly.
Follow the policy’s claim instructions: notify the insurer within its deadline, obtain a police reference after theft and retain damaged parts until agreed otherwise. Ask whether repairs need prior authorisation. If refused under a limit or exclusion, request the exact provision and calculation before using the formal complaints process.
