Arrange a vehicle in advance

DVSA does not provide a car for the practical test. Most learners use their instructor's vehicle, although a suitable private car is also allowed. Bring your UK licence and theory certificate if you have it. Check the current test-day requirements ↗ before paying someone to provide a vehicle.

Establish the date and centre, then agree arrangements with the vehicle provider. A free test appointment does not guarantee that an instructor or company can supply a car at that time.

Using an instructor's vehicle

Ask whether the quote includes a warm-up lesson, travel to the centre, waiting and the return journey. Check whether the instructor accepts learners they have not taught and requires an initial assessment. Obtain these service conditions in writing.

If using a new instructor, verify their qualification through the DVSA service ↗. Discuss transmission and an opportunity to become familiar with the car beforehand. Knowing the controls helps you concentrate on the road, but cannot guarantee a pass.

Your own car and a rental have different rules

The DVSA vehicle requirements ↗ include roadworthiness, tax, an MOT where required and insurance covering a driving test. You need L plates, an additional interior mirror for the examiner and an appropriate passenger seat. Some models are excluded because of visibility, so check the particular car beforehand.

A private car does not need dual controls, but a hire car does. An ordinary rental without dual controls therefore does not become suitable simply because you buy extra insurance. The rental company's permission and compliance with DVSA requirements are separate checks.

Contract, price and a fallback plan

There is no universal test-car hire tariff. Request the total charge, deposit, cancellation policy, damage liability and excess, mileage allowance and extra waiting charges. Establish who is legally allowed to drive to the centre and back.

On the day, recheck tyres, dashboard warnings, mirrors and documents. An unsuitable vehicle can lead to cancellation without a test-fee refund. The official examination fee ↗ and the vehicle provider's charges are separate payments; the second payment's refund rules depend on the contract. Keep written confirmation that the car is suitable and agree what happens if it breaks down.
