How to prepare for the British car theory test

Prepare for the car theory test in two parallel strands: road rules and recognising developing hazards. Overseas driving experience is useful, but you still need to learn the British rules. This guide covers the DVSA system in England, Scotland and Wales; Northern Ireland has a separate process.

Check which test you need

You need a provisional driving licence to book. Multiple-choice questions and hazard perception form one examination, and you must pass both parts. If you hold an overseas licence, first check whether you need to obtain a British licence through tests. Upgrading a British automatic-only licence to a manual licence does not require another theory test. The official booking guide ↗ explains the requirements and exceptions.

Choose your study materials

DVSA identifies three core publications: The Highway Code, Know your traffic signs and Driving — the essential skills. Its revision page ↗ links to the official kit, apps and a free practice test. Practice questions cover the same subjects but are not the actual examination questions. The examination itself is available in English, Welsh or British Sign Language.

Begin with a short diagnostic test. Keep an error log by subject: signs, priorities, speed and vulnerable road users. After a mistake, explain the rule to yourself instead of memorising where the correct answer appears. If English makes questions difficult, build a road vocabulary list and return to the original wording. A study group can help explain tricky situations; complete your final timed mock tests independently.

Understand the two parts

The multiple-choice section ↗ contains 50 questions and allows 57 minutes. You can flag questions and return to review them. Some questions concern a short video of a driving situation.

Hazard perception ↗ uses 14 clips containing 15 developing hazards. Recognise when something starts requiring you to change speed or direction. Continuous or patterned clicking can result in no score for a clip, and you cannot review your response. Practise identifying the developing situation rather than a fixed clicking routine.

Decide when to book and budget

Choose a date after achieving consistent results in both parts across several practice sessions. The official car theory test fee is £23. Materials, apps, transport and any repeat attempt are additional expenses. Check the current GOV.UK fee table ↗ to distinguish the examination fee from an intermediary's markup. A promised guaranteed pass does not make a third-party website official.

Prepare your documents and next steps

Take your UK photocard driving licence. A paper licence also requires a valid passport, and a name change after booking requires appropriate evidence. The wrong documents can mean cancellation without a refund, so check the document requirements ↗ before travelling.

You need 43 out of 50 for multiple-choice and 44 out of 75 for hazard perception. The certificate lasts two years, during which you must pass the practical test. Failing either part means retaking the whole examination, with at least three working days before another attempt. Keep your certificate number and use the results guidance ↗ to review your weak subjects before paying for another appointment.
