Booking and changing a practical driving test under current DVSA rules

For car practical tests in England, Scotland and Wales, learners must now personally book, change and cancel their appointments. Instructors cannot do this on their behalf. Check old advice about intermediaries or apps that automatically move appointments against the current DVSA booking guidance ↗.
You normally need to pass theory first. Prepare your UK driving licence number, payment card and instructor details to check availability. Upgrade tests, such as automatic to manual, use telephone booking.
Understand how appointments appear
New appointments 24 weeks ahead are released at 06:00 on Mondays. Earlier dates appear when another learner changes or cancels an appointment, which can happen throughout the week. There is no separate waiting or cancellation list.
Choose several realistically reachable centres after consulting your instructor. A distant centre requires preparation for local roads, a vehicle and extra travel time. An earlier slot is not useful if you are unready or have no car. Do not hand account details to someone promising privileged access to appointments.
Check change limits and deadlines
You can change a car test appointment twice. Further changes require cancellation and a new booking. A free change requires at least ten full working days' notice; Monday to Saturday count, excluding public holidays. Check the deadline for your own appointment in the confirmation email or booking service under the change rules ↗.
Moving to a more expensive appointment requires the difference; moving to a cheaper one produces a refund of the difference. An unavoidable short-notice cancellation, such as illness, may qualify for a separate evidence-based refund application. This is not an automatic refund for every change of plans.
Check the confirmed arrangements
Save the date, time, centre address and booking reference, and tell your instructor immediately. The official practical test fee ↗ is £62 on weekdays or £75 during evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Providing a car costs extra.
Several days beforehand, check your UK licence and the DVSA documents checklist ↗. If the photocard is lost, arrange a replacement and consider moving the test promptly. A missing paper theory certificate is different: the examiner can check your result electronically. Do not confuse losing that letter with not having the required driving licence.
