Can I take duty-free alcohol through a flight connection?

Check the whole itinerary

Buying something in duty free does not guarantee that a bottle will pass your next security check. List the departure, connecting and return airports, and whether you must enter the public area. If there is another security screening, check that particular airport's rules, including overseas airports. Do not automatically apply a UK sealed-bag exemption to a connection in another country.

Before paying, show the shop your boarding passes for every leg and ask whether its packaging is suitable for that transit. If the answer is unclear, consider buying at the last airport where your itinerary permits carriage.

What UK rules provide

According to GOV.UK ↗, duty-free liquids can pass UK security when the required conditions are met: the product and visible receipt must remain inside a sealed security bag. Do not open it before your final destination. Security staff may open it for inspection; tell them about your onward flight.

Ordinary liquid rules depend on the airport. Many retain a 100 ml container limit, while some allow up to two litres. A partly empty large bottle is still not a 100 ml container. Check return and connecting airports even if your UK departure used more permissive screening rules.

Connections and checked luggage

If self-transfer requires collecting and rechecking a suitcase, establish whether you can move the purchase into checked baggage before the next security check. Account for weight allowances, protecting glass and airline restrictions on the contents. Do not expect access to a bag checked through to your final destination.

Keep the receipt and packaging with the product. Do not independently combine purchases from different shops into a previously opened bag. Ask the retailer and airport about the permitted procedure.

Security and customs are separate

Permission to take a bottle through security does not determine how much alcohol you may import without paying duty. Check the destination country's official customs rules. When returning, use the UK personal import guidance ↗.

Plan quantities according to the travellers and applicable conditions rather than the size of the shopping bag. If a declaration is required, have the receipt ready and use the appropriate process. Before buying, weigh any saving against the possibility of refusal at a connecting security checkpoint.
