Using foreign civil-status certificates in the UK

A birth, marriage or divorce certificate is assessed within a particular procedure. A register office, UKVI, bank and court may require different formats. Obtain a checklist covering originals or copies, full or short certificates, electronic extracts, translation and authentication.
An old certificate does not become invalid simply because the paper is old. However, a particular transaction may require a recent extract showing the current register entry or additional details. Clarify the reason before ordering a replacement and expensive delivery.
Check translation and legalisation separately
Translation explains a document's contents; an apostille authenticates the origin of a signature or seal. They are not interchangeable. For example, UKVI's visitor guidance requires a complete, verifiable translation ↗, including confirmation of accuracy, date, translator identity, signature and contact information. Follow the instructions for your own procedure.
FCDO legalisation ↗ covers eligible British documents and certifications by UK public officials. Apostilling a British notarial act does not automatically replace an apostille from the country that issued a foreign certificate. If authentication of the underlying civil record is required, establish the procedure with that country's competent authority.
Prepare the chain of names and civil status
Compare surnames, dates and places throughout the documents. Several marriages or name changes may require connecting certificates. Do not alter an original document yourself to fix transliteration differences: discuss an explanation, translation or corrected official document.
For marriage notice, GOV.UK lists originals and evidence ending an earlier marriage ↗. An overseas divorce may require additional assessment. Do not substitute an interim court decision for a final divorce document simply because both are described as a “judgment”.
Protect originals and avoid unnecessary registration
A foreign marriage is not reissued as a British marriage certificate ↗. Recognition depends on the applicable law; absence of a British register entry does not by itself mean there is no marriage.
Make clear scans of every page and attachment, including reverse sides and apostilles. Ask whether originals will be returned and how to send them. Obtain additional official copies if several procedures run simultaneously. Give a translator the recipient's precise requirements before paying: notarisation is not automatically required for every document, and expensive authentication cannot guarantee acceptance of an unsuitable format.
