Removing limescale from a London bathroom and household appliances

Begin with the material and its instructions, rather than the strongest bottle on the shelf. Damage to stone, a specialist finish or an appliance can cost considerably more than the cleaning product.
Identify the surface
List what needs cleaning: glass, plated taps, ceramic, grout or natural stone. Look up the finish manufacturer’s care instructions. A bathroom-cleaner label does not establish compatibility with every item in the room.
Test an inconspicuous area first and follow the labelled contact time. Leaving a solution overnight is not automatically more effective or appropriate. Rinse and dry in the specified order, using a cloth or tool that the surface manufacturer allows.
Find the appliance model
Kettles, coffee machines, irons and washing machines do not share one descaling recipe. They may have dedicated maintenance modes and restrictions on chemical products. For example, Bosch provides a coffee-machine descaling procedure ↗; that procedure is not a universal instruction for other machines.
Enter the full model number on the manufacturer’s website and find the maintenance or descaling section. Check whether a filter must be removed, how many rinses are required, and how to complete the service programme. Review the agreement if an appliance is rented or covered by a servicing contract.
What to buy in the UK
Look for a limescale remover suitable for the surface, or the specified appliance descaler. Compare cost per treatment rather than bottle size: concentration and dosage vary. Establish whether a product is ready to use or requires dilution.
You may also need a compatible soft cloth, the gloves specified on the label and ventilation. Do not mix cleaning products or add extra acid or bleach in an attempt to strengthen a formulated cleaner. Keep the product in its original labelled container.
Reduce repeat cleaning
After showering, remove remaining droplets with a suitable squeegee and dry places where water collects. Create maintenance reminders for appliances using their instructions and your usage. Thames Water describes the connection between hardness and scale ↗.
If deposits return unusually quickly alongside reduced flow or a leak, investigate equipment condition separately. When leaving rented accommodation, photograph the cleaned surfaces. Avoid aggressive treatment purely to improve appearance: a damaged finish can itself become an issue in a deposit dispute.
