Using an ESOL certificate for university, settlement or citizenship

An ESOL certificate can record learning or a particular qualification, but the label does not make it universal evidence of English. Employers, universities and the Home Office have different requirements. Find the official requirement for your purpose, then compare the full examination title and awarding organisation.
Keep the certificate, skill results, test date and result reference. A useful CV credential may still be insufficient for a formal application.
Settlement and citizenship
Check the qualifications accepted on GOV.UK ↗ and the Secure English Language Test rules ↗. An ordinary college ESOL Skills for Life qualification is not automatically a SELT. The approved test, provider, centre, required level and skills must fit your specific route.
Check validity for that purpose too. Some previously accepted results benefit from exceptions to the usual time limit. Do not buy a resit solely because a certificate is over two years old, or assume an old result qualifies without checking the conditions. Other forms of evidence or exemptions may apply to some applicants; consult your category.
University admission
Read the programme’s English language requirements. Universities determine acceptable tests, overall and individual skill scores, result age and alternatives. For example, UCL’s programme page ↗ links to its relevant admissions requirements. ESOL Level 2 does not automatically satisfy an IELTS Academic condition.
Send admissions the exact title of your existing document and seek written confirmation. Pre-sessional English is only an option where the particular offer and programme conditions allow it.
Before paying for another test
Check that your name matches the application, and confirm the test version, country, approved centre, result format and latest acceptable date. “Any English certificate is accepted” is too vague to rely on. If a college promises immigration or university acceptance, request the receiving organisation’s official requirement. That organisation decides whether to accept the evidence, rather than the course seller.
