Understanding ESOL levels and assessment

ESOL is not only for beginners. Course descriptions may use pre-entry, Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, followed by Level 1 and Level 2. These are UK qualification labels. Level 2 does not automatically mean A2 on the European CEFR scale; matching the numbers is misleading.
City Lit’s ESOL listings ↗ include introductory and more advanced provision, including specific writing courses. Read each description: a course called beginner may still expect a few words and simple phrases.
What assessment establishes
A college needs to understand your speaking, listening, reading and writing. These skills may sit at different levels. Comfortable everyday conversation does not necessarily mean you are ready to write complex letters. Ask the provider about the assessment format, which may involve discussion and short tasks.
Assessment is not a competition to achieve the highest possible placement. The aim is work that is achievable while helping you progress. Mention difficulties with reading, hearing, vision or online forms and ask about suitable assessment support.
If you are starting from scratch
Ask explicitly whether the provider accepts complete beginners and offers pre-entry or literacy support. Explain which languages you read and write and your previous educational experience. Not every introductory class is designed for someone unfamiliar with the Latin alphabet.
If the only available course is too advanced, ask about another centre or the next appropriate intake. A convenient timetable cannot compensate for the wrong level.
Plan your next step
Check whether there is an examination, which awarding organisation issues the qualification and what progression requires. Discuss the workload with your teacher after the first sessions; moving groups depends on availability and provider rules. Request specific feedback about which skills are ready for the next level and which need further practice. If your goal is university admission or an immigration application, check that organisation’s separate requirements. Progress within ESOL does not automatically make its certificate acceptable for every purpose.
